Middlesex County, also known as the "Heart" of New Jersey is located squarely in the center of New Jersey and stretches from the Rahway River south to Mercer and Monmouth Counties and from Raritan Bay on the Atlantic Ocean west of Somerset County. The County is 318 square miles is size, has 25 municipalities which includes the City of New Brunswich.

Middlesex County has been one of the fastest growing counties in state, having an estimated population increase between 1970 and 1990 of 87,967. Projections for 2000 are estimated at 745,000 while its population is projected to increase to nearly 769,000 by the year 2010.

As population grows so must housing as evidence by 45.7% increase in housing units since 1970 including new homes and apartments. As of 1990 the county estimates that it now has 250,174 housing units. This is an average 784 units per square miles.
