Upper West Side, New York City. The Upper West Side is located north of Columbus Circle (59th/60th street), west of Central Park and east of the Hudson River. The northern border is tough to define - for simplicity, one can assume it's 110th street. If you are looking for art, serenity, majestic views, and family lifestyles, this is the place. With Lincoln Center in its bosom and Times Square just below it, ballet, operas, concerts, & musicals are in the air. By the way, the definition above implies that what lies north of the Upper West Side (i.e. Morningside Heights and the campus of Columbia University) is a separate neighborhood.

In contrast to its eastern counterpart, the Upper West Side is more economically and racially diverse. Parts of the neighborhood are extremely wealthy, most of it is upper-middle class, but there are parts (mostly, in the northern half) that are visibly poor. Just a little side note, Connan O'Brien and Madonna also live in Upper West Side.

For certain folks - Lincoln Center performers, Columbia University professors and the rich and famous who want to be near the Park, the Upper West Side is the most natural place to live. There are also occasional apartment bargains in the Amsterdam Avenue area which can definitely qualify as a deciding factor.

But to single people under 35 who are none of the above and have not found any bargains, I would suggest this neighborhood is a rather dull and inconvenient compromise. In my opinion, if you can afford it, you'll be better off looking in Midtown or Downtown. You'll save more money on cabs coming home every Saturday night.
