TriBeCa, New York City. TriBeCa stands for "Triangle Below Canal". The name is derived from the name of Canal Street, a major street in lower Manhattan. As all things hip in New York City, TriBeCa used to be very affordable, but along with hip now days comes price. In the 1970's and 1980's its vast industrial space attracted artist and other "creatives" the same way SoHo did, at approximately the same time. Gentrification began and the population soared from a few hundred people in the mid-seventies to over 20,000 in 2003. Bottom line is, its anything but affordable.

TriBeCa is not known for Subway convenience or central location. The Red Line, the only subway in TriBeCa, stops at Canal and Franklin Street, both of which can be 15 minute walk in this area. Bus transportation is moderately convenient in TriBeCa and proximity to the Holland Tunnel makes travel to New Jersey easy.

Some of New York's most famous restaurants are located here, notably DANUDE, NOBU, TRIBECA GRILL, MONTRACHET and CITY HALL. Plenty of more moderately priced options exist as well, but nothing dirt cheap. Arguably one of the coolest neighborhoods in New York City, TriBeCa is a land of multi-million dollar lofts, pricey restaurants and occasional office/industrial building. But it is truly a wonderful place to live for the young and outgoing.
