Manhattan Neighborhoods. New York City is made up of five boroughs Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island and The Bronx. Most tourist arrive in Queens (which is were both La Guarde and JFK airports are located) and spend 99% of their trip in Manhattan. Manhattan is the smallest of the five boroughs, but as far as population goes it ranks 3rd right behind Brooklyn and Queens Manhattan is the original (pre-1898) New York City and still clearly the most important of boroughs. Almost everything you hear concerning New York City really consist of Manhattan. Downtown and Uptown, Greenwich Village, Central Park, Empire State Building, Times Square, Wall Street, Madison Avenue, Fifth Avenue are just some of the things that have made this island so famous.
Manhattan is roughly about 13 miles long and 3 miles wide consisting of 12 Districts each one with a history onto itself. The borough of Manhattan can roughly be divided into 5 big areas: Downtown, Midtown, Uptown, Harlem and Northern Manhattan.
Manhattan - Downtown
Downtown consist of everything below 14th Street. The neighborhoods that make up this area are Battery Park City, Chinatown, Financial District, Greenwich Village, Little Italy and Lower East Side. Downtown tends to attract a younger crowd and more "hip" than the rest of the city. There are plenty of restaurants and bars located around this area, in addition to the campus of New York University, and a variety of cafes and plenty of so-called "hip" people walking around, often aimlessly. Downtown is also the more expensive area in Manhattan to live.
Manhattan - Midtown
Midtown is everything between 14th and 59th Streets. The lower part between 14th and 28th or even 34th, is sometimes referred to as "Midtown South". Neighborhoods that make up this part of Manhattan consist of, Chelsea, Flatiron, Gramercy Park, Hell's Kitchen (also called Clinton), Murray Hill. Compared to Downtown, Midtown is more reserved, touristy, older, with less "street culture". People walking the streets usually have a specific destination in mind. The part of Midtown above 42nd, east of 8th Avenue is also a heavy-duty office district, which basically means avoid it Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. Many hotels are located in Midtown.
Manhattan - Uptown
Uptown is split into two large areas - the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side. In between these two lies Central Park. The areas are mostly residential with equally upscale yet slightly different demographic of residents. The Upper West Side is more liberal and artsy, while the Upper East Side close to the park is more wealthy. Mostly junior-level Wall Streeters live there, but both UES and the UWS are terming with well-paid young professionals.
Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 104th is sometimes called "the Museum Mile". That's because it has many museums on it, in case you were wondering
