Lower East Side, New York City. The Lower East Side has been redefined in recent years to include only the areas below Houston, above Delancey (or Grand - as you prefer) and east of Bowerly. The Lower East Side is not known for its Subway convenience or central location. Subway travel to Queens and Brooklyn from here is convenient, but Subway travel within Manhattan is not great. Lower East Side residents rely more on bus transportation down here.

Tradionally, throughout the 20th Century, the Lower East Side was populated by the successive waves of new immigrants - first the Jews, then East Europeans, and finally, Latinos. In the 1990's, hordes of hipsters invaded and ultimately succeeded in gentrifying most of the neighborhood. Nowdays, the area West of Clinton street is considered "cool", despite its somewhat rundown look.
