East Village, New York City.  The East Village, in its modern definition, means everything east of Lafayette / Fourth Avenue, South of 14th street and North of Houston Street. The name is derived from the East Village's parent neighborhood called "Greenwich Village". Originally, the are was considered part of the Lower East Side, but sense the 50's, when artist and writers started their slow migration east in search of cheaper rent, the neighborhood has been associated more with Greenwich Village and its artsy community than with immigrants living on the Lower East Side.

The East Side Village's Tompkins Square Park is a local gathering spot especially for the great dog run. The main drags of the East Village are St Marks Place and Second Avenue. Buildings in the East Village are predominately older 4-5 story walk-ups. By New York standards, the rent in the East Village is cheap, but residents here sacrifice amenities and east commuting.

The Green Line is the only subway line in the East Village, so subway travel is not easy. Alphabet City and anywhere east of 1st Ave will require a 10-15 minute walk to a subway station. However, like all East Side areas, buses are convent.
