Chinatown, New York City. Just like in most neighborhoods around the county, Chinatown is named as such because of its resident's ethnicity. Unlike neighboring Little Italy, Chinatwon is continually expanding. The border between the two has all but disappeared and now Chinatown stretches from City Hall to Grand Street. Chinatown is located in what is more commonly known as Lower East Side. This part of Manhattan was historically known for its ethnic melting pot and poverty. Finally, after 150 years of resistance, the Lower East Side has succumbed to Manhattan's affluence.

Chinatown had its share of crime problems in the 80's and 90's - mostly the gang-related variety, but things have definitely improved. It is considered a relatively safe neighborhood, but even the police have to cooperate with the locals - its just the way things are run here.

Many people would perhaps never consider Chinatown as a place to live. If you are an exception, you should know that Chinatown is cheaper that almost every other area of downtown Manhattan and is, despite its somewhat inconvenient transport links, a great place to live. You just have to be comfortable with its street culture and smells.
