Hoboken, New Jersey. Hoboken, New Jersey is situated along the west banks of the Hudson River, in Hudson County, New Jersey. The name "Hoboken" comes from the Lenape Indians and means "land of the tobacco pipe." This is because the Lenape used the soapstone of Castle Point to make their pipes.
Hoboken was formed from North Bergen Township in 1849, the City of Hoboken is 1.3 square miles in area and is located on the Hudson River, directly across from New York City. The city is bordered on the north by Weehawken and Union City and on the west and south by Jersey City. Hoboken's landmarks include the Stevens Institute of Technology at Castle Point, founded in 1870, and the Erie Lackawanna Commuter Rail Terminal. Hoboken is also famous for the first steamboat, the first locomotive, the first baseball game (in Elysian Park) and is the home of Frank Sinatra.
Hoboken was also known for the first brew house in America. The house sit north of Castle Point and was owned by Hoboken's first resident Aert Van Putten, who was leasing the land from a Dutch farmer named Hendrick Van Vorst.
Hoboken underwent a gentrification period much the same way as did the neighborhood of SoHo in Manhattan. With the presence of artist and musicians this changed the perception of the city such that people now perceived Hoboken has an interesting, safe, and even desirable place to live.
